Alloy 304L is a low carbon austenitic stainless steel. Through controlled addition of nitrogen to alloy 304, 304L can meet the same mechanical properties as 304. For this reason, many products have dual certification as 304/304L and 304.

Corrosion resistance: The corrosion resistance of alloy 304/304L makes it suitable for a variety of commercial and home applications, including 304L stainless steel tubing. In fact, alloy 304/304L is one of the most widely used stainless steels available. Alloy 304/304L is atmospheric corrosion resistant as well as intergranular corrosion resistant in the as-welded condition. This alloy has immense toughness and strength at cryogenic temperatures.

Oxidation resistance: For projects involving cyclic heating, alloy 304/304L can resist oxidation up to 1500 ̊ F and for continuous service up to 1650 ̊ F.

Welding capabilities: Most shop-fabrication practices can easily weld alloy 304/304L. Due to the low carbon make, the alloy permits some exposure in the carbide precipitation range of 800 ̊ F – 1500 ̊ F.

The alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, it can also become faintly magnetic in cold working or welding conditions. Austenitic stainless steels are some of the most weldable of high-alloy steels. You can use them for multiple resistance and fusion welding processes.

Tensile Requirements

When you need alloy 304/304L for specific tasks, make sure the yield strength and tensile will hold. Alloy 304 has an 80 (KSI) tensile strength and a 35 (KSI) yield strength. For a Megapascal (MP) measurement, multiply the KSI by 6.895.
